RONSON, Mick

(b Hull, Yorkshire; d 29 April '93 in London aged 46 or 47 of cancer.) Guitarist. Played in local band the Rats, joined David Bowie's Spiders from Mars (with fellow Rat Mick 'Woody' Woodsmansey) to play key part in LPs The Man Who Sold The World '70, Hunky Dory '71; his riffy playing was linchpin of the power trio approach effective on Ziggy Stardust '72 and Aladdin Sane '73; he was also credited as co-arranger on these and Pin-Ups '73. Bowie's retirement that year left Ronson sessioning with Mott the Hoople; Ian Hunter left that band and worked with Ronson for some years. They made two albums on RCA under Ronson's name '74--5; Slaughter On Tenth Avenue and Play Don't Worry charted in Billboard but failed to reach the Hot 100. The rest of their albums were under Hunter's name (see his entry); virtually all charted. Ronson also joined Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder tour where he met ex-Byrd Roger McGuinn, played on and prod. his highly praised Cardiff Rose '76, leading to further prod. credits: Dead Fingers Talk, David Johansen, Rich Kids, Houserockers '78--80, others. With Hunter prod. ex-Meatloaf vocalist Ellen Foley on first LP Night Out '79; he prod. and played with folky prot‚g‚e Sandy Dillen. Only After Dark on Golden Years incl. the two RCA albums plus bonus tracks.
