(b 9 July '53, Rock Hill SC) Modern hillbilly singer and songwriter who hit the top with self- penned 'Thinkin' Problem' single and gold album '94 following 20 years of near obscurity. Played in bluegrass and folk groups in his teens; moved to Texas '74 and linked up with Walter Hyatt in Texas bar-band Uncle Walt, made several albums on small labels; back to Carolina to concentrate on country career '85. Signed to RCA Nashville '87, released unsuccessful singles, album never released. Joined Warners '93 with control of his music, a rich hybrid of '50s honky- tonk and modern country.
