RICHMOND, Dannie

(b 15 Dec. '35, NYC; d 15 March '88) Drummer, one of the best. Played tenor sax as teenager; joined Charles Mingus Workshop '56 and was Mingus's drummer of choice for the rest of his life: 'He's a musician, not just a timekeeper, one of the most versatile and creative drummers I've ever heard.' First recordings were Mingus dates for Atlantic early '57, then trio with Hampton Hawes on Jubilee, classic Tijuana Moods on RCA same year, scores more. Between Mingus dates he recorded with Chet Baker on Riverside, Jimmy Knepper on Bethlehem, also worked with Mark/Almond band (LP on CBS), Joe Cocker, Elton John, soul singer Johnny Taylor; gave drum clinics when not on tour, published method book in Germany '65. With Chico Freeman quartet '80; founder member of George Adams/Don Pullen quintet for many LPs; worked with other Mingus alumni: LPs Live At Montreux '81 on Atlantic, Reincarnation '82 on Soul Note as mus. dir. of Mingus Dynasty; own albums as leader: 'In' Jazz For The Culture Set '65 on Impulse, trio with Jaki Byard, Cecil McBee, guests; Jazz a Confronto '75 on Horo with Adams, Jack Walrath; Ode To Mingus '79 on Soul Note with Bill Saxton on tenor sax, Danny Mixon on piano (b 19 Aug. '49, NYC), Mike Richmond on bass; The Last Mingus Band Plays Charles Mingus on Timeless '80 (also sings), Dannie Richmond Quintet on Gatemouth '80, Dionysius '83 on Italian Red label, all with Walrath, Ricky Ford, Cameron Brown, Bob Neloms on piano. Co-led George Adams/Dannie Richmond Quintet for Hand To Hand '80, Gentleman's Agreement '83 on Soul Note, with Knepper, Hugh Lawson on piano (b 12 March '35, NYC), Mike Richmond.
