(b Douglas Jackson Brooks, 19 June '56, Marietta GA) Sad-edged country singer. Mother was a singer; he played first gigs at age seven. Formed teen bands; interested in recording techniques, set up his own home studio; cut some home-made demos and landed Epic recording contract '88; changed name to avoid confusion with Garth Brooks. First 15 singles '90--94 all country top ten with 'In A Different Light', 'A Jukebox With A Country Song', 'Too Busy Being In Love' and 'Why Didn't I Think Of That' all no. 1. Underwent emergency bypass surgery '92 and suffered further heart problems '94 and '96, but maintained hectic touring schedule. Had five of his songs featured in movie Gordy '93 in which he appeared. First four albums Doug Stone, I Thought It Was You, From The Heart, More Love all gold; others incl. Faith In Me, Faith In You '95, all on Epic.
