(b '43, Boston MA) Producer. Part of New England folk and blues scene early '60s; discovered Paul Butterfield Blues Band in Chicago, which led to their backing Bob Dylan at controversial '65 Newport Folk Festival, of which Boyd was production manager. Ran London office of Elektra label; prod. album What's Shakin' '66 incl. early performances by Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood. Helped run premier London underground club UFO, showcasing early gigs by Soft Machine, Pink Floyd. Prod. first Floyd single 'Arnold Layne' '67 but was then dropped: the label insisted on using house producer Norman 'Hurricane' Smith. Prod. and managed Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band, formed own Witchseason company, establishing him as an underground svengali. Prod. all Fairport LPs until '70, Incredible's best work; Nick Drake's only three albums; Sandy Denny and her short-lived Fotheringay band. Prod. first film '72, documentary on life and works of Jimi Hendrix. Formed own Hannibal Records late '70s; prod. Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot Out The Lights '82; Richard's Hand Of Kindness '83, Across A Crowded Room '85. In '80 prod. film about 2-Tone movement Dance Crazy, incl. performances from Specials, Madness, etc. Staged S. African play Poppie Nongena '83, which transferred to the West End. As legendary figure of '60s, came back into favour in '80s: prod. LPs '85 for new bands R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs. Active in world music, building up a marvellous Hannibal catalogue available '90s on Rykodisc incl. reissues of UK folk, Cuban and Bulgarian music, Marta Sebesty‚n, Kanda Bongo Man, the McGarrigle Sisters, Toumani Diabate, Dagmar Krause, Danny Thompson, Norma Waterson, Joseph Bowie's Defunkt, much else.
