SATRIANI, Joe

(b 15 July '57, Carle Place, NY) Guitarist, composer, sometime singer. Began as a guitar teacher on Long Island, financing a few recordings himself; axe heroes Steve Vai (Whitesnake) and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) raved about him to the Relativity label; Not Of This Earth was followed by Surfing With The Alien '87, the first entirely instrumental rock guitar album to sell a million since anyone could remember. He worked for Mick Jagger and was nom. for two Grammys. Mini LP Dreaming No. 11 was half live instrumental; Flying In A Blue Dream '89 had hard rock, ballads and even a little banjo, also vocals on six of 18 cuts. He toured with a trio (bassist Stu Hamm from the Jagger gigs, ex-Alice Cooper Jonathan Mover on drums); when critics complained because he'd added words, he laughed: 'Before, they were saying, ''Too bad he doesn't sing'' and now they say, ''Why is he singing?''' (He described his voice as 'a Long Island whine'.) The Extremist '92 was instrumental; two-disc Time Machine '93 had one live disc, the other incl. early tracks; Joe Satriani '95 had one vocal on twelve tracks. G3 Live In Concert '97 joins Satriani with Steve Vai and Eric Johnson and their bands on tour '96; Crystal Planet '98 was a studio set with eleven instrumentals.
