BRADFORD, Bobby

(b 19 July 1934, Cleveland MS) Cornet, trumpet, teacher, composer. He lived in Europe, was later a teacher in California. He played with Ornette Coleman (albums Science Fiction, Broken Shadows '71), John Carter, Quincy Jones. 

Bradford and Carter (reeds, mainly clarinet) formed the New Art Jazz Ensemble, initially with Tom Williamson on bass and Bruz Freeman on drums (Von's brother) and recorded Seeking on Revelation, Flight to Four and Self-Determination Music on Flying Dutchman, and Secrets on Revelation again, '69-72. Bobby Bradford With John Stevens and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble '71 was made in London with Trevor Watts (alto sax), Ron Herman (bass), Julie Tippetts (vocals, guitar), drummer John Stevens; the session was partly issued on Black Lion, Freedom, etc; later complete in two volumes on Nessa, in 2009 on a Nessa two-CD set. Love's Dream '73 on Emanem was made in Paris with Stevens and Watts; Lost In L.A. '83 by Bobby Bradford and the Mo'tet, One Night Stand '86 with the Frank Sullivan Trio both on Soul Note. He played on albums by trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, composer Vinny Golia (three-disc limited edition Compositions For Large Ensemble '86), Comin' On '88 on hat Hut by the Bradford/Carter Quintet; Tandem 1 and Tandem 2 '79-82 on Emanem had just Bradford and Carter in a duo. John Carter & Bobby Bradford on Mosaic Select (2010) gathered together the Revelation tracks and added previously unissued gorgeous duo tracks recorded in 1979 to make a three-CD set of beautiful West Coast free jazz, a limited edition soon out of print. Silver Cornet on Nessa was recorded live in Baltimore in March 2014 by the Bradford/Gjerstad Quartet, with Frode Gjerstad on reeds, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on bass and Frank Rosaly on drums.
