SHAW, Ian

(b 2 June '62, St Asaph, Wales) Singer. Began as brass-band cornetist, moved to London to study music. Influenced by Madeline Bell and Mel Tormé, but also by soul singers, especially Dusty Springfield. Won Best Vocalist award in Wire magazine's readers' poll '90; made album with Carol Grimes, Lazy Blue Eyes, for Offbeat Records same year. Live act is an engaging mix of torch songs, jazz standards, soul material and originals, captured on Ghostsongs '92 on Jazz House.
