SHOWADDYWADDY

UK rock'n'roll revival group formed '73 from merger of Leicester groups Choice and Hammers: Dave Bartram and Buddy Gask, vpcals; Russ Field and Trevor Oakes, guitars; Al James and Rod Deas, bass; Malcolm Allured, Romeo Challenger on drums. Signed with Bell, had 22 top 40 singles '74-81 (label taken over by Arista mid'70s). "Hey Rock And Roll' at no. 2 first of three hits '74, but after originals did less well they switched to covers: Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps To Heaven' was no. 2 '75; seven more in top 10 '76-8. Like USA counterparts Sha Na Na they were a popular live act, with period costumes, over-the-top stage show, but unlike them did not get additional exposure on TV. Remained popular in cabaret.
