STEGALL, Keith

(b Robert Keith Stegall, 1 Nov. '54, Wichita Falls TX) Country singer, songwriter and record producer best known for his work with Alan Jackson. Father was steel guitarist with Johnny Horton. Formed his first band The Pacesetters at age 12; took up drums and joined rock and soul bands; then back to acoustic guitar and vocals with folk group the Cheerful Givers. Worked as church music director and lounge singer in Shreveport '75-7; moved to Nashville '78 landed songwriter's contract and wrote hits for Dr Hook, Al Jarreau, Charley Pride, Eddy Raven etc; signed to Capitol '79 with minor hits; moved to Epic '83 with biggest hit "Pretty Lady' '85. Concentrated on songwriting and record producing working with major acts incl. Jackson (prod. all his hits) and joined Mercury as Nashville A&R chief, signing Terri Clark, Kim Richey, etc. Reactivated recording career '94 on Mercury, wrote and self-produced Passages '96.
