SCOTT, Shirley

(b 14 March '34, Philadelphia PA; d 10 March 2002) Keyboards, mainly organ. Played trumpet in high school, piano in father's club; took up organ '55, worked with Lockjaw Davis '56-60, formed trio, worked with Stanley Turrentine, married him and recorded with him on Blue Note and Prestige (Blue Flames and Soul Shoutin' now on CD); they separated '71. She formed a new group '74 with saxophonist Harold Vick (b 3 April '36, Rocky Mount NC; also teacher, composer, actor; LPs on StrataEast, Muse, RCA, Blue Note). She often appeared on NYC and Philadelphia TV, a very popular, swinging blues-oriented player. LPs with Davis included Cookbook on Prestige; of about 20 LPs with own trio on Prestige '58-64 Soul Sister '60, Satin Doll '61, Sweet Soul, Workin' were among the best known. She also recorded prolifically for Impulse '64-7 (sometimes with larger groups, once with strings, reissues and compilations on CD); on Atlantic '68-70 (with Turrentine '68), on Cadet '71-2, One For Me '74 on StrataEast with Vick and Billy Higgins; sextet Oasis '89 on Muse; she played piano on trio sets Blues Everywhere and Skylark '91 on Candid.
