(b 16 Nov. '38, Big Hill KY) Successful country songwriter, sometime vocalist and session guitarist; cousin of Dan Seals (England Dan), Brady Seals (ex- Little Texas) and Jim Seals (Seals and Crofts). Began on guitar in teens, formed combo, toured in Dick Clark review late '50s with pop singer Jo Ann Campbell; they married early '60s, signed as a duo to Atlantic, had top 40 R&B hit 'I Found A Love, Oh What A Love' '64. Left music business, worked in construction in Indianapolis, made demos and took them to Nashville, got writer's contract late '60s; sessioned with Ray Stevens, Waylon Jennings etc, wrote with Donnie Fritts ('We Had It All'), Don Goodman, Will Jennings. 'Feelin's' (written with Goodman and Jennings) was a hit duet by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn; Twitty recorded 'There's A Honky Tonk Angel Who'll Take Me Back In' '74, 'Don't Take It Away' '79. His songs have been recorded by Lonnie Mack, Dobie Gray, Percy Sledge ('Stop The World Tonight'), Ronnie Milsap, George Jones, Rod Stewart, Oak Ridge Boys, many more. His records on Monument, Polydor, Atlantic, Columbia, Elektra '80, RCA '83 were not hits despite critical praise, but he is one of the most successful and prolific Nashville songwriters of the last 25 years.
