(b 20 April '39, Jacksonville FL) Country/pop singer. Discovered at Nashville talent show by Archie Bleyer's Cadence label, he followed the Everly Bros into the charts with popped-up versions of country songs: over 25 Hot 100 entries '58-66, 14 in top 40, many his own compositions. "Poetry In Motion' '60 was biggest at no. 2, though "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'' '61 ran close at no. 3 (with Charlie McCoy on harmonica; the song has been covered over 100 times). "Without You' '61 and "Talk Back Trembling Lips' '63 were both no. 7; "Poetry' was no. 1 UK. He continued in USA country chart '67-8 on MGM, recorded for UA, Reward etc through to late '80s.
