TWAIN, Shania

(b 28 Aug. '65, Windsor, Ontario) Pop-rock-country singer-songwriter who took the USA by storm with The Woman In Me, biggest-selling album by a female country singer, still climbing after nine million. Adopted as a baby and raised in Timmins, Ontario; appeared on local TV and radio at ten and has performed in local clubs since her teens. Moved to Nashville '90, worked as a waitress, signed to Mercury '92. Made country chart debut following year, eponymous first album was typical modern country, but marriage to Robert John 'Mutt' Lange (prod. Def Leppard, the Cars etc) three days after Christmas '93 turned the trick: they worked together on the breakthrough second album The Woman In Me '95 with no. 1 country singles 'Any Man Of Mine' and '(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here'. Unlike most country stars she did not tour to promote the album and only did a handful of big concerts and TV appearances. Much of her appeal rests with younger fans who like her bare midriff, rock-influenced music and sensual videos; it's too soon to say if she will last the distance.
