VERCKYS

(b Kiamuangana Maleta, '44, Zaire) Singer-composer, saxophonist, bandleader, producer, studio owner. Played in Franco band, left to form own Orchestre Veve, one of most popular Zaire bands '70s-80s. Early hit with Franco was "Nakomituna', about struggle against cultural alienation. Band featured on compilation Bankoko Baboyi '69; own LP Dynamite '70; mid-'70s sound captured on two vols of Verckys Et L'Orchestre Veve. Established own prod. company '76, released classic 9-disc series Les Grand Success Des Editions Veve: as the boss Verckys picked the best, with volumes by Kamele, Lipua-Lipua, Veve, Kiam, Zaiko, etc. Re-organised own ensemble and added Papy Baluti '78 to series; became one of the most influential prod. in Zaire; by the '80s his own EVVI label had issued classic LPs incl. 2 vols of Verckys Et L'Immortal Veve.
