(b 11 Oct. '03, Bluefield WV; d 25 April '45, Calcutta) Highly rated and legendary pianist. To Chicago '21 from New Orleans; recorded as a sideman with Jimmy Wade's Moulin Rouge Orchestra '23-4, Erskine Tate's Vendome Orchestra '26 (with Louis Armstrong), left USA '26 for Asia. Worked in Shanghai '29, recruited Buck Clayton band for a season there '34; worked in Singapore etc and India, where he died of cholera. Seven solos made during Paris visit to 1937 International Exhibition have been issued on various compilations, revealing swing resembling James P. Johnson and treble voicing that may have influenced Earl Hines. He also made eight tracks for EMI/Columbia in India '42, four with bass and drums, four in an octet, Weatherford vocals on six.
