WHITE, Lari

(b 13 May 1965, Dunedin FL) Country singer, songwriter. She sang with the family group at church functions, attended University of Miami, then won first place on TNN's You Can Be A Star '88. Moved to Nashville and worked as a backup singer with Rodney Crowell '91-2, who produced her first album, Lead Me Not '93 for RCA. Without inventing a style of her own, she had jazz, gospel, modern and traditional country and pop influences; Garth Fundis was brought in to produce Wishes '94, with radio friendly singles 'That's My Baby' and 'Now I Know' both hits, and the album went platinum, but White refused to play the commercial radio game. Next album Don't Fence Me In had more depth, but RCA was unhappy and dropped her when sales didn't reach gold. She released Stepping Stone '98 on LYST, a Universal label. With a rich and powerful voice, songwriting skills and musical integrity, she'll do her music on her own terms.
