WEBER, Eberhard

(b 22 Jan. '40, Stuttgart, Germany) Bass, composer. Learnt cello from age six, took up bass '56. Professional from '72, after lengthy spell with pianist Wolfgang Dauner working in all fields from rock to free improvisation. Joined jazz-rock band Spectrum '73--4, but left to explore field opened up by his invention, the electrobass, a bodyless acoustic instrument modified electronically to produce lithe, sonorous sound. Formed Colours '75 with Charlie Mariano, keyboardist Rainer Br]auu[ninghaus and drummer Jon Christensen, established himself as one of Europe's premier bassists with unique, plaintive sound. ECM albums incl. The Colours Of Chloe '73 (with Br]auu[ninghaus), Chorus '84, Orchestra '88, and Pendulum '93, a solo album with overdubbing used to great effect. Others are Ring (with Gary Burton), Silent Feet, Fluid Rustle and Later That Evening (with Bill Frisell).
