BROWN, Roy

(b 10 Sep. '25, New Orleans; d 25 May '81) R&B singer. Began with local bands; recorded his own song 'Good Rockin' Tonight' for De Luxe '48, covered by Wynonie Harris on King, later by Elvis Presley on Sun. Top ten R&B hits '49--51 incl. 'Boogie At Midnight', 'Hard Luck Blues' (no. 1), 'Love Don't Love Nobody', 'Long About Sundown', 'Cadillac Baby' and 'Big Town'. Signed with King '52 and had less luck, though always a popular act; to Imperial '56, teamed with Dave Bartholomew for cover of Buddy Knox's 'Party Doll' (top 20 R&B '57; made Hot 100 pop, where Knox had no. 1). 'Let The Four Winds Blow' same year made pop top 40. After a period of inactivity joined the Johnny Otis revue; re-formed own band late '70s, toured until sudden death.
