TURRENTINE, Tommy

(b 22 April 1928, Philadelphia; d 13 May 1997) A popular trumpeter who played on Blue Note albums and made his own as a leader '60 on Time/Bainbridge including his brother Stanley on tenor sax. A good composer and an underrated soloist, he recorded as a sideman with Stanley, Jackie McLean, Lou Donaldson, Horace Parlan etc but especially with Sonny Clark (wrote 'Midnight Mambo' on Clark's Leapin' And Lopin'). He left the uncertain world of jazz for studio work c'70 but kept his hand in.
