BUSSE, Henry

(b 19 May 1894, Magdeburg, Germany; d 23 April '55, Memphis TN) Cornet, trumpet, bandleader. Came to USA '16; with Paul Whiteman '17--28; recorded as Busse's Buzzards '25, later formed own dance band. Solo on Whiteman's 'When Day Is Done' '27 started a vogue for 'sweet jazz'; he also used mute to great effect, and later used shuffle rhythm as identifying gimmick with his own band. Co-wrote 'Wang Wang Blues', 'Hot Lips', recorded with Whiteman and issued back- to-back '20, a huge hit; same pairing with his own band '35 stayed in print for years.
