(b Charles William Butterfield, 14 Jan. '17, Middleton OH; d 18 March '88) Trumpet. Always popular mainstream stylist: solos with Bob Crosby '37--40, Artie Shaw '40--41, Benny Goodman '41--2, studio work and freelance. Lived in Virginia (worked there with Ernie Caceres), then Florida late '50s--60s; founder member of World's Greatest Jazz Band '67--72. Prolific recording on Capitol, Decca, RCA, Columbia etc '44--62. Rapport '75 was a duet with Dick Wellstood on 77 label (Dobell's London jazz record shop was at 77 Charing Cross Road), For Better Blues And Ballads '75 on Dutch Riff label with Bud Freeman, Bob Wilber; Plays George Gershwin '77 on Carosello with an Italian band; Watch What Happens '77 on Flyright/Jazzology with English sidemen; on Fat Cat's Jazz label mostly from Manassas Jazz Festival: The Incomparable Butterfield Horn '77 (big band with Wellstood, Warren Vach); Swinging At The Elks '78 with Wellstood and Kenny Davern on clarinet; You Can Depend On Me '80 with Dill Jones on piano.
