Played with many bands including Don Redman '35-7, Teddy Wilson '39-40; Andy Kirk '40; was married to Mary Lou Williams and played with her '42; with Duke Ellington '38, '43- 51, '57-9; then freelanced in NYC. Played lead as well as solo. Version of 'Mood Indigo' on LP Ellington Indigos '59 was almost entirely a lovely muted Baker solo because, Duke said, 'Shorty loves to play it.' |
