BENFORD, Tommy

(b 19 '05, Charleston WV; d 24 March '94, Mount Vernon NY) Drummer. With brother Bill on tuba, played in Jenkins Orphanage band, S. Carolina, toured Europe '14. Worked with Edgar Hayes, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, most notably on Jelly Morton's Red Hot Peppers records '28, '30; session of 11 June '28 incl. Bill in band, trio, quartet sides. Back to Europe with Eddie South '32; recorded there with him, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Joe Turner, etc. Freelanced NYC; toured Europe again '52, '60-1. Came out of retirement to join pianist Bob Greene (b '22, NYC) in World of Jelly Roll Morton concerts, '73-4; album on RCA. Lived in France, often interviewed for jazz documentaries.
