Worked with Edgar Hayes, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, most notably on Jelly Morton's Red Hot Peppers records '28, '30; session of 11 June '28 incl. Bill in band, trio, quartet sides. Back to Europe with Eddie South '32; recorded there with him, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Joe Turner, etc. Freelanced NYC; toured Europe again '52, '60-1. Came out of retirement to join pianist Bob Greene (b '22, NYC) in World of Jelly Roll Morton concerts, '73-4; album on RCA. Lived in France, often interviewed for jazz documentaries. |
