BLACKWELL, Scrapper

(b Francis Hillman Blackwell, 21 February 1903, probably NC; d 7 October 1962, Indianapolis IN) Guitar, piano, blues singer. He made his own cigar-box guitar as a child; often worked outside music in the 1920s; best known for collaboration with Leroy Carr from 1928. Recorded solo, with Carr, Chippie Hill, Georgia Tom (Thomas A. Dorsey), etc 1928-31, 1935. After Carr's death he left full-time music, but recorded 1959-61. He was shot to death. Compilation on Yazoo; also on reissue albums with Carr.
