ANDY, Horace

(b Horace Hinds) Prolific Jamaican singer and guitarist, with a distinctive choking tenor voice. After first recording '66, he retired to perfect his vocal technique, came back '70 to make hits at Studio One: Skylarking LP compiled title track, 'See A Man's Face', 'Just Say Who', 'Love Of A Woman'; further sessions were collected on the label's Best Of album later in the decade. Left Brentford Road early '70s to freelance on local labels such as Derrick Harriott's Crystal and Leonard Chin's Santic, as well as Randy's, Ja-Man, Channel One, producers like Keith Hudson, Niney, Yabby You, Phil Pratt and in '73 with Bunny Lee's Jackpot label for a few dozen singles, LPs You Are My Angel and Sings For You And I. Emigrated to the USA, settled in Connecticut, set up own Rhythm label, released singles like 'Control Yourself', 'Good Vibes' and a cover of Delroy Wilson's 'Won't You Come Home'. Returned briefly to Jamaica '80 and teamed with Tapper Zukie, who prod. his biggest hit so far, 'Natty Dread A Weh She Want', and LP of that name. He remained busy and estimated that he'd written over 300 songs, many found on LPs like Showcase, In The Light, Pure Ranking, Dance Hall Style, Exclusively, Confusion, electronic set Elementary '86 on Rhino CD.
