BECKETT, Harry

(b 30 May '35, Barbados, West Indies) Trumpet, flugelhorn, piano. To UK '54; chosen by Charles Mingus to play in film All Night Long '61, featured in groups of Graham Collier, Mike Westbrook, Mike Gibbs, Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor. Equally at home in free and mainstream contexts, he became an avuncular presence in '80s for emerging figures in UK big band Jazz Warriors (see Courtney Pine). His romantic tone can be heard in a live group context on Bremen Concert and Live: Volume 2 '87, both on West Wind, and in duets with pianists Django Bates, Keith Tippett and Joachim Kuhn on Passion And Possession '91 on ITM. His group Flugelhorn 4 + 3 (or the Flugel Four, featuring four leading UK practitioners) made the highly regarded All Four One '92 on Spotlite. Compared 2 What? '95 on Basic was a quintet with Annie Whitehead on trombone and John Burgess on reeds, the CD labelled 'acid jazz', which is nonsense.
