BERGONZI, Jerry

(b 21 Nov. '47, Boston MA) Tenor saxophone. Played with Dave Brubeck '72--'81, then formed own bands Con Brio (quartet LP of that name with bassist Bruce Gertz on a Plug label '83) and Gonz (trio with Gertz and drummer Bob Gullotti). Among sideperson roles he played on vibist Joe Locke's Scenario '88 on Concord Jazz. One of Blue Note's '90s hopes, he appeared on Joey Calderazzo's debut In The Door, then on his own label debut Standard Gonz '90. Influenced by Sonny Rollins, Bergonzi is an energetic, gritty player. Other Bergonzi albums are on Red Records: On Red, quartets Inside Out and Lineage '89, Tilt '90 and Etc. Plus One '91.
