(b Philippe Pages, '54, Paris) Pianist who does decorated versions of light classics, pop songs. Allegedly raised in one-room flat; learnt piano from father; given own piano at six by grandfather. Won first prize at Paris Conservatory of Music at 16; abandoned classical music to accompany Johnny Halliday, Michel Sardou, Thierry Le Luron with day job as bank clerk, signed with Delphine label: first record 'Ballade Pour Adeline' written by producer Paul De Senneville for his daughter sold millions world-wide. International tours promoted by Delphine boss Oliver Toussaint sold huge quantities of records after concerts: 2,800,000 in France '80, making him biggest seller ever there; biggest seller in Japan '80--81; in South Africa four of the top five LPs May '81 were his. Broke into UK market late '82 with two albums; The Magic Of Richard Clayderman was heavily promoted on TV with the handsome blond gazing soulfully at the viewer and he sold out a major London date. About 20 LPs listed in UK catalogue '85, called Dreaming, I Love You, etc.
