COLLETTE, Buddy

(b William Marcell Collette, 6 August 1921, Los Angeles CA; d there 19 September 2010) Reeds, piano, composer; one of the top flautists in jazz. He led his own band 1940-1; was then with Les Hite '42, Benny Carter '47-9, Gerald Wilson '49-50; he gigged with everybody on West Coast and was a member of Chico Hamilton's combo '56; led his own group '59 including Wilson and Red Callender. There was much radio and TV work with Jerry Fielding in the mid-'50s, followed by more studio work, film music, and teaching.

His own albums were made mostly on the West Coast, since '54 including sets on Contemporary (Fantasy), Mercury and Italian labels; septet Jazz Love Paris '58 on Specialty later on Fantasy; Crown sessions '59-60 were issued under the names of Wardell Gray, Stan Getz, Erroll Garner, none of whom was present. He helped start the Legend label mid-'70s; album Now And Then '73 a septet with Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Callender on both bass and tuba; quintet Blockbuster '73 was on RGB; Flute Talk '88 on Soul Note. Jazz For A Thousand Oaks '96 on Ufo-Bass was an octet with Sam Most and Al Viola, Sinatra's guitarist.
