(b 6 Dec. '25, Pittsburgh PA; d 5 Aug. '93, Hollywood CA) Reeds, especially tenor sax; almost the only oboe in jazz. With Stan Kenton '45--51, married June Christy; with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars at famed West Coast club from '54; many records with Kenton on Capitol, Rumsey on Contemporary, tours with Christy (LP with her Do-Re-Mi); recorded with Four Freshman, Shorty Rogers, Buddy Rich, Laurindo Almeida (Viva Bossa Nova!), many of the sidemen listed below. First own LPs: Group Activity '54, quintet with Shelly Manne, Bud Shank on baritone; Shifting Winds '55 octet with Cooper playing English horn and oboe as well as tenor, Shank on tenor and alto, Jimmy Giuffre playing three reeds: both recorded for Capitol, later on Affinity UK. Also Coop! '57 on Contemporary with Victor Feldman, Frank Rosolino, others (some tracks with Candoli bros); Capitol LP '61 with Shank, Rosolino, Conte Candoli, Buddy Collette; Tenor Sax Jazz Impressions '79, quartet on Trend; Plays Michel Legrand '80, quartet on Discovery. Also a composer of film scores, worked on twelve- tone octet for woodwinds, etc.
