CRUMLY, Pat

(b 9 Feb. '42, Oxford, England) Saxophones, flute. Equally at home in rock (Eric Burdon), R&B (Chris Farlowe, Alan Price) and jazz, Crumly is an important if undersung talent. His jazz recordings include Uneasy Peace, with a band called Edge '78 on Chiltern Sound, and on Spotlite, Third World Sketches '84, Behind The Mask '92 and Flamingo '94. Crumly's is a virile but sensitive, blues-inflected style. The last two sets in particular are good examples of British mainstream jazz, with such excellent sidemen as Richard Edwards (trombone), John Pearce (piano), Simon Woolf (bass), Simon Morton (drums) and others. Following Ronnie Scott's death Crumly went on tour with Martin Drew and John Critchinson in tribute.
