CYRILLE, Andrew

(b 10 Nov. '39, Brooklyn, NY) Drums, composer. Playing at age eleven; considered chemistry as career; studied at Juilliard, with Philly Joe Jones; worked with Illinois Jacquet, Olatunji, others '50s; recorded with Coleman Hawkins (The Hawk Relaxes), Walt Dickerson (Relativity) on Prestige; Bill Barron (Hot Line) on Savoy. Worked with Roland Kirk, Cedar Walton, with Cecil Taylor '65--75 (Conquistador! '65), incl. period as Artist in Residence at Antioch College, Ohio. Like Taylor he was an outcast, ideas far ahead of the time. Records with Jazz Composers' Orchestra; with Jimmy Lyons (Other Afternoons), Grachan Moncur (New Africa), own solo LP What About '69, all on BYG in France, later on Affinity in UK; with Marion Brown on ECM (Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun '70). Formed trio of three percussionists with Milford Graves and Rashied Ali; Dialogue Of The Drums was a duo with Graves '74; Celebration '75 was a septet with Ted Daniel (trumpet, flugelhorn), vocalist (Jeanne Lee) and a poet; Junction '76 was the debut of a group with Daniel called Maono, all three on IPS (Institute of Percussive Studies). Maono contributed 'Short Short' to Wildflowers festival May '76; Metamusicians' Stomp '78, Special People '80, The Navigator '82 were all made in Italy by Maono for Black Saint. Solo The Loop '78 on Ictus was made in Italy; Nuba '79 a trio with Lyons and Lee, Something In Return and Burnt Offering duos with Lyons were all on Black Saint; Andrew Cyrille Meets Br”tzmann In Berlin '82 on FMP; trio Life Rays and quartet X-Man '93 on Soul Note, as was Pieces Of Time with Graves, Kenny Clarke and Don Moye; quintet My Friend Louis with Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman etc on DIW. Ode To The Living Tree '94 on Evidence with David Murray, Oliver Lake, Fred Hopkins, Steve Colson, drummer Mor Thiam on one track was recorded in Senegal. Trio Good To Go, With A Tribute To Bu '95 on Soul Note with James Newton on flute, Lisle Atkinson on bass got a rave review in Cadence.
