Soul-funk dance band formed in California '68 as Project Soul, to Memphis '72, changed name. Remarkably consistent lineup: Mike Cooper, lead vocals, guitar and Louis McCall, drums (high school friends who started the group); Cedric Martin, bass; Danny Thomas, keyboards; Karl Fuller, Paul Harrell, Felton Pilate II, horns and various instruments (Pilate also did lead vocals). Backed Stax artists, recorded for Fretone, then Mercury from '76. Second LP Secrets '77 incl. "Ffun', no. 1 soul single (no. 23 pop chart) same year; third Loveshine '78 incl. "Shake And Dance With Me', also no. 1 soul hit; other hits incl. "Chase Me', "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind', "Lady's Wild', "Too Tight'. Seven albums reached USA top 100 '73-85.
