CROSSOVER

A song or a record intended for one market that sells more widely, crossing over to another. As with covers, the most dramatic crossovers occurred in the '50s, when pop music was in flux; i.e. R&B hits by Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and many others crossed over to the pop chart; during golden era of soul early '60s crossover became takeover. Good country songs have been crossing over since Bing Crosby covered them in the '40s, but in today's fragmented market and proliferation of charts the term is losing its meaning, except for the marketing and accounting departments.
