CARSON, Martha

(b Irene Ambergay, 19 March '21, Neon KY) Country- gospel singer who appealed to a wide audience, becoming one of most popular in her genre. Began on radio in Bluefield WV '39; toured with husband as Martha & James Carson '40s (he sang and played mandolin, the son of Fiddlin' Doc Roberts). They were known as the Barn Dance Sweethearts, longtime members of WSB Atlanta Barn Dance. Divorced '51, Martha joined Opry, found greater fame with her fervent vocal style; she recorded for RCA and headlined one of Elvis Presley's first tours. Also a prolific songwriter, her most famous incl. "Satisfied', "I'm Gonna Walk And Talk With My Lord' and "I Can't Stand Up Alone', the latter covered by Clyde McPhatter and Jesse Winchester. LPs incl. Explodes '86 (Bear Family), Satisfied '89 (Stetson).
