CARR, Leroy

(b 27 March '05, Nashville TN; d 29 April '35, Indianapolis IN) Piano, blues singer. Teamed with Francis 'Scrapper' Blackwell (b 21 Feb. '03, probably NC; d 7 Oct. '62, Indianapolis IN), they toured and recorded together from '28, became famous in the Indianapolis area, then enormously popular in black communities everywhere: Carr's piano, smooth vocal style and songs were important infl. on the next generation of urban blues. Best-known songs are 'How Long Blues', 'In The Evening When The Sun Goes Down'. Died of alcoholism. Tracks (some with Josh White, second guitar) were compiled on CBS, Yazoo, Magpie.
