CARROLL, Barbara

(b Barbara Carole Coppersmith, 25 January 1925, Worcester MA; d 12 February 2017) Jazz pianist and vocalist. The cabaret business being what it is, her playing may have been underrated, many regarding her as a singer who accompanied herself, but she studied at the New England Conservatory, and led a trio on USO tour. She had acting/playing role in Me And Juliet on Broadway '53. Her husband Joe Shulman played bass in her trio until his death '57. She recorded for Discovery '49-50, Atlantic '51, RCA '53-6, Verve c1956, Sesac/Jazz Vault '59, Kapp, WB '64, Blue Note '76, From The Beginning on UA '77 (with such sidemen as bassists Jay Leonhart and Ron Carter, drummer Steve Gadd), solo At The Piano '80 on Discovery, Old Friends on Audiophile (Leonhart and Grady Tate), in the '90s Live At The Cafe Carlyle, This Heart Of Mine and Everthing I Love '95 on Cabaret DRG, the last with Leonhart, Joe Cocuzzo, Bucky Pizzarelli and three others. All In Fun '96 on After 9 was a tribute to Jerome Kern with some good sidemen, unnecessary strings on half the tracks. Apart from her fans, she was highly regarded and well liked bythe music world.
