CARROLL, Diahann

(b Carol Diann Johnson, 17 July 1935, Bronx NYC; d 4 October 2019, West Hollywood CA) Actress and singer. She received a Metropolitan Opera scholarship at age ten to the High School of Music and Art; studied sociology at NYU, became model and singer, made Broadway and film debuts '54 in House Of Flowers and Carmen Jones respectively. She won a Tony for No Strings '62, Oscar nomination for Claudine '74; TV series Julia '67-71 was the first to star a black entertainer. She appeared in TV's Dynasty '84, published autobiography Diahann '86. Other films: Porgy And Bess '59, Goodbye Again and Paris Blues '61, Hurry Sundown '67, The Split '68, The Five Heartbeats '91.
