She received a Metropolitan Opera scholarship at age ten to the High School of Music and Art; studied sociology at NYU, became model and singer, made Broadway and film debuts '54 in House Of Flowers and Carmen Jones respectively. She won a Tony for No Strings '62, Oscar nomination for Claudine '74; TV series Julia '67-71 was the first to star a black entertainer.
