ARTWOODS, The

UK R&B band formed c'63 from Red Bludd's Blusicians, after departure of Don "Red Bludd' Wilson (bass), Reg Dunnage (drums). Lineup of new group: Art Wood, vocals; Derek Griffiths, guitar; Malcolm Poole, bass; Jon Lord, keyboards; Keef Hartley, drums. Frontman Wood was vocalist in Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and elder brother of future Rolling Stone Ron Wood; classically-trained Lord came from Bill Ashton Combo. Popularity on disc never equalled that in London clubs. Album Art Gallery '64 on Decca (eponymous compilation '73 on Spark). Split summer '67 when rampant psychedelia forced name change to St Valentine's Day Massacre; Griffiths to sessions, Hartley to John Mayall, Lord to Flowerpot Men, thence Deep Purple. Band ultimately remembered more for connections than for music.
