CHAMBERS BROTHERS

Vocal/instrumental group formed early '60s in LA, became funk pioneers. George Chambers (b 28 Jan. '44) played bass, brothers Willie (b 3 March '38) guitar, Lester (b 13 April '40) harmonica, Joe (b 24 Aug. '42) guitar; all b Mississippi. Began as gospel/folk quartet, added white drummer Brian Keenan (b 28 Jan. c'44), played Newport Folk Festival '65, rock and soul venues. LPs on Vault: People Get Ready '65, Chambers Brothers Now '66, Shout! '68, Feelin' The Blues '70; on Columbia: The Times Has Come (first and biggest of six LPs to chart; title cut first and biggest at no. 11 of five Hot 100 entries '67--70), A New Time, A New Day, all '68; Love, Peace And Happiness '69 was two-LP set, one disc live at Fillmore East; New Generation '70, Oh My God! '72 followed by split. Brothers re-formed '74 for Unbonded and Right Move '75 on Avco. Greatest hits LPs on Vault and Columbia charted '70-- 71; later two-disc best-of on Fantasy represents gospel family period. Sessioned with Maria Muldaur on Takoma '80.
