(b Mary Frances Penick, 30 Dec. '31, Dry Ridge KY; d 19 Sept. 2004, Nashville) Country singer. Teamed with high school friend Betty Jack Davis (b 4 March '32, Corbin KY; d 2 Aug. '53) in Davis Sisters vocal duo: sang on radio incl. WWVA Jamboree (Wheeling WV), signed to Fortune label '49, RCA '50. No. 1 country hit 'I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know' '53; then Betty Jack was killed and Skeeter badly injured in a car crash. Skeeter came back solo on RCA '58, joined Grand Ole Opry '59 and had nearly 20 years of hits including 'Set Him Free' '59, '(I Can't Help You) I'm Falling Too' '60, 'My Last Date (With You)' '61, 'The End Of The World' '62 (a pop hit as well), 'I'm Saving My Love' '63, 'Gonna Get Along Without You Now' '64, 'Fuel To The Flame' '67, 'What Does It Take' '67, 'I'm A Lover (Not A Fighter)' '69, 'Bus Fare To Kentucky' '71, 'I Can't Believe It's All Over' '73. She recorded duets with Bobby Bare ('A Dear John Letter' '65), Porter Wagoner, George Hamilton IV. Signed with Mercury '76; remained a popular stage act; owned Crestmoor Music Publishing Co. Many albums included End Of The World '62 (reissued on CD), Tunes For Two '76 and More Tunes For Two '81 (with Bare), Sings Buddy Holly (RCA reissue on Detour '83), She Sings, They Play '85 on Rounder with NRBQ. She published an autobiography, Bus Fare To Kentucky, in 1993.
