ALEXANDER, Monty

(b Bernard Montgomery Alexander, 6 June 1944, Kingston, Jamaica) Piano. To Florida '62, NYC c.1970. Led own trio; with Milt Jackson and Ray Brown early '70s; played Concord, San Diego, Monterey jazz festivals; albums on several labels. He has a unique laid-back style, slightly behind the beat and with the Caribbean influence. Many albums recorded in Europe for MPS and others include a solo set So What? '79 on French Black & Blue label. Other LPs include Now's The Time '74 (MPS, on Pausa in USA), Montreux Alexander Live on MPS '76, Soul Fusion with Jackson on Pablo '77. Albums on Concord Jazz: Facets '79 with Brown, Jeff Hamilton on drums; then Trio '80, Overseas Special and Triple Treat '82 with Brown and Herb Ellis, no drums; Triple Treat II and III '87 with John Frigo added. Reunion In Europe was a trio with Hamilton on drums and John Clayton, bass; Ivory And Steel (on Concord Picante) had bass, drums, percussion and steel drum, recorded '80; Jamboree came out '88 and To The Ends Of The Earth was a third album with Ivory and Steel, adding Steve Turre on trombone (b 12 September 1948, Omaha), Antonio Hart on alto sax. Full Steam Ahead '85 was a trio with Brown, drums; The River '90 had Clayton and Ed Thigpen. Caribbean Circle '92 was on Chesky; Friday Night and Saturday Night came out on Lime Tree. Monty Alexander At Maybeck '94 is a solo set in the recital series on Concord, not before time: he is still underrated. Trio Echoes Of Jilly's '96 on Concord was a tribute to Sinatra.
