KATZ, Steve

(b 9 May '45, NYC) USA guitarist, producer. Folk boom drew him from Brooklyn to Greenwich Village at 15, where Dave Van Ronk tutored him for 18 months. Joined Even Dozen Jug Band '63 (fluctuating lineup incl. John Sebastian, Joshua Rifkin, Maria D'Amato [Muldaur], Stefan Grossman; eponymous album '64 on Elektra). Joined Blues Project, replacing Artie Traum; followed Al Kooper to Blood Sweat & Tears, outlasted him there (through New Blood '72). Played on Blues Project Reunion In Central Park '73, then with American Flyer, soft-rock supergroup with Eric Kaz (ex-Blues Magoos), Doug Yule (ex-Velvet Underground), Craig Fuller (ex-Pure Prairie League); split after disappointing albums American Flyer '76, Spirit Of A Woman '77. Turned to production, incl. three mid-'70s LPs by Lou Reed, three by Irish folk-rockers Horslips late '70s, others for Rory Block, Graf, Elliott Murphey. Also sessioned on harmonica for Reed, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Duke Jupiter.
