MANDEL, Harvey

(b 11 March '45, Detroit) Guitarist. Raised on Chicago blues, played in Charlie Musselwhite's Southside band; own albums on various labels incl. Christo Redentor '68, Righteous '69, Games Guitars Play '70 (all on Philips), Electronic Progress '71, Get Off In Chicago and The Snake '72 (Charles Lloyd guesting on flute on the latter), Shangrenade '73, Feel The Sound Of Harvey Mandel '74; the first, with Musselwhite, Pete Drake on steel guitar, Hargus 'Pig' Robbins and Graham Bond on keyboards etc, was regarded as his best solo work, showcasing extended soloing and mastery of feedback technique. He also played with blues band Canned Heat for a year, then with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers for three LPs (USA Union, Back To The Roots, Beyond The Turning Point '70--71); made his own Get Off In Chicago '72; formed instrumental group Pure Food and Drug Act that year but Choice Cuts failed to sell, perhaps because the '60s heyday of such groups was past: lineup was Don 'Sugarcane' Harris on violin, Coleman Head and Randy Resnick on guitars, bassist Victor Conte and drummer Paul Lagos. He toured USA/UK '74 supporting Canned Heat with a new band, retaining some earlier personnel and adding vocalists; sessioned with Rolling Stones '75 for Black And Blue and was tipped to replace Mick Taylor but didn't. Lengthy session credits incl. work with Bond, Ron Carter, Jimmy Witherspoon; duo with vocalist Dewey Terry on his Chief '73; with soft-rockers Love on Reel To Real '74. Best Of on Janus '75 compiled later solo work. He sang on only one track in his career. Later work incl. Snakes And Stripes '95 on Clarity.
