(b 8 May '28, Sparta TN) Country singer and fiddler who never quite made the big time. Appeared on local radio '40s, debut on Grand Ole Opry '47; was a member of Roy Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys; recorded solo for Mercury, RCA, Decca, had minor hit "Rosebuds And You' '63 on Starday. Albums incl. Old Time Fiddlin' And Singin' '58 on Mercury, With Bobby Sykes '66 on Hilltop, Tennessee Jubilee '77 on Sonet.
