Worked as pipe-fitter, moved into music full-time, signing with Fabor (subsidiary of Abbot) '56 and recorded without much success. Wrote songs such as 'Dark Moon', 'Snowflake', 'Behind The Tear', recorded by Bonnie Guitar, Jim Reves, Sonny James etc. In '62 'From A Jack To A King', a song written five years earlier, was an international pop/country hit: his own recording of it made no. 2 country/no. 6 pop USA, no. 2 UK; in the following eight years he scored with 'Invisible Tears', 'Do What You Do Do Well', 'Teardrop Lane', etc. He recorded for Capitol '65, Gene Autry's Republic label '70; he was later based in Prescott, Arizona. |
