QUINICHETTE, Paul

(b 17 May '16, Denver CO; d 2 June '83, NYC) Tenor sax. Studied alto, clarinet as a child; played with Jay McShann, Johnny Otis, Benny Carter, Sid Catlett, Louis Jordan, Lucky Millinder etc then with Count Basie '51-3. Known as "Vice Pres' because of tonal and stylistic resemblence to Lester Young, but had his own laid-back if less original style. Delightful work on Basie's small-group Verve/Clef LP The Swinging Count, recorded late '52. Led own combos; own LPs incl. On The Sunny Side mid-'50s, now on Fantasy; played with Benny Goodman octet '55; on Prestige Basie reunion LPs '57-8 (with Nat Pierce on piano); recorded with Bobby Brookmeyer, Billie Holiday, Woody Herman, Dinah Washington, LaVerne Baker etc; left music '60s, worked in electronics; returned '73 and worked in NYC with pianist Brooks Kerr, others incl. group called Two Tenor Boogie '74 with Buddy Tate or Harold Ashby. Later LPs incl. Prevue on Famous Door with Kerr, Tate quintet The Texas Twister '75 on Master Jazz. Suffered long bouts of ill health.
