ROSEWOMAN, Michele

(b 19 March '53, Oakland CA) Piano, composer. Influenced by hearing Cecil Taylor's group in San Francisco '72, as much by Jimmy Lyons as by Taylor. Moved to New York '78, made a living as a piano tuner, given ASCAP/Meet the Composer grant '84 to write for Brooklyn Philharmonic, also taught music for the NYC Parks Department. Played with Oliver Lake, Billy Bang etc, but best heard on her own recordings, which mix Afro-Cuban musical traditions with European harmonies. Albums: The Source '83 on Soul Note, with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Pheeroan akLaff on drums; on Enja: Contrast High '89 with group Quintessence; Quintessence '92, with Steve Coleman, Greg Osby and Terri Lynn Carrington; Harvest '93 with more M-Base adherents, saxophonists Steve Wilson and Gary Thomas. Occasion To Rise '92 with Rufus Reid and Ralph Peterson is on Evidence. She added two vocals to trio set Spirit '94 on Blue Note incl. African dialect on 'For Agayu', with Kenny Davis and Gene Jackson.
