REDMAN, Joshua

(b 1 Feb. '69, Berkeley CA) Tenor saxophone, composer. The son of Dewey Redman (above), he is one of the few young players as indebted to swing players like Ben Webster and Lester Young as to subsequent saxophonists. Joshua Redman '92 on WB (with Christian McBride on bass) and follow-up Wish '93 (Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins) were perhaps overpraised for this reason, but his engagingly modest stage demeanour and patent willingness to learn his craft will see him through. Blues For Pat '94 on Jazzdoor was made live in San Francisco with Higgins, Metheny and McBride; back in the studio, Moodswing '94 on WB elicited a burst of enthusiasm from one critic: 'This guy's getting seriously good.' His quartet had Brad Mehldau on piano, discreet and imaginative; then two- CD Spirit Of The Moment: Live At The Village Vanguard '95 had Peter Martin on piano, Chistopher Thomas on bass, Brian Blade on drums, with more energy than his studio albums; Freedom In The Groove '96 on WB with the same lineup acknowledged infl. incl. Motown, but holding something back: no doubt a promising talent, it is fascinating to listen to him getting there. A tenor-duel album Tenor Legacy '94 on Blue Note with Joe Lovano was well received; among his freelance gigs was Gettin' To It '94 on Verve, the debut album by the sensational young McBride.
